Our summer series included the site-specific installations BED, BATH & BEYOND (Nathaniel de Large, Scott Keightley, & Juan Antonio Olivares), NEW AGE///\NEW LIFE (Morgan Silver-Greenberg) and performances by Andrea Merkx, Sarah Elliott, and BFFA3AE. In an effort to give a physical presence to the channels of communication opened through these experiences, each BYP collaborator invited several artists to exhibit in the space. The result is VIS-A-VIS, a conversation among eighteen artists touching on spatial intervention, ambiance, community, and the uncanny.BACK YARD PROJECTS is a seasonal, collectively organized project space occupying a one bedroom apartment and garden in Alphabet City, NYC. We work with artists to develop site–specific projects, give new contexts to existing works, and engage with nature as a studio and platform for creation and collaboration. Hot Toddy & wine bar in the garden. MORGAN SILVER-GREENBERG
NEW AGE ///\\ NEW LIFE
AUGUST 12 - SEPTEMBER 3, 2011
Opening Reception, Friday August 12, 6-9pmFor our second exhibition, BACK YARD PROJECTS presents a site-specific installation by Los Angeles-based artist Morgan Silver-Greenberg. NEW AGE ///\\ NEW LIFE investigates man’s innate desire to ascribe order to the chaos of the universe through the construction of belief systems. Silver-Greenberg appropriates and collages aspects of various modern religions to reveal a universal proclivity for order and divinity. Juxtaposing the material language of contemporary commerce with natural and scientific elements, the artist analyzes the interrelationship between the ideologically pure and the complex. The foundation of a greater research project, NEW AGE ///\\ NEW LIFE will grow and unfold throughout the course of the exhibition and ultimately result in the creation of a hybrid new age religious text.BACK YARD PROJECTS is a seasonal and collectively organized project space occupying a one-bedroom apartment and garden in Alphabet City. We offer artists the possibility to work site-specifically, develop new contexts for existing works, and engage with nature as a studio and platform for creation and collaboration. Our 2011 exhibition roster has thus far included site-specific projects by Scott Keightley, Nathaniel de Large, Juan Antonio Olivares (Bed, Bath, & Beyond), Morgan Silver-Greenberg (NEW AGE ///\\ NEW LIFE), and performances by Sarah Elliott, Andrea Merkx, and BFFA3AE. Through the artists’ and performers’ engagement with the space and the community’s access to it, we hope to shed light on the rhythm of our quotidian interactions and spaces.BACK YARD PROJECTS is open for programs and by appointment Friday-Sunday.Contact: Holly Stanton - backyardprojectsny@gmail.com

On Friday July 15th, please join us at Back Yard Projects for the closing party and BBQ of our first exhibition, BED, BATH, & BEYOND, and for a special performance by collective BFFA3AE, “Uh Duh Yeah”. This event also marks the end of our first performance series curated by Sean Keenan, featuring prior performances by Sarah Elliott and Andrea Merkx."Uh Duh Yeah" presents a montage of onomatopoeic verses in popular pop songs. With the use of well know songs, the video provides a way to unite the viewers in a space that activates recollection without an obvious conscious link to the intellect. A language is created through the interweaving of these intermittent sounds to bring forth a syntax that shares no allegiance to any nationality. The aesthetic of the video, ranging in forms from standard karaoke videos to user created lyric videos, brings forth a new idea about the language generated through user participation prevalent on the Internet. BFFA3AE was formed in 2007 as a net art collective and its members consist of Daniel Chew, Micaela Durand, Matthew Gaffney, and Maximiliano Ferro. The performance will begin around 8pm, but join us before for sangria, an open BBQ, and a final visit of BED, BATH, & BEYOND. BYOGrillables but help us out by donating & drinking our wine & beers!
